Car key replacement in Lancashire

What a replacement car key involves depends on the vehicle and the key. A plain mechanical key can be cut from the lock or the key code. A key with an immobiliser chip has to be matched to the vehicle. Call with the registration and key type and we will confirm what is possible before you commit to anything.

Charges confirmed on the phone · call-out and labour rates

Lost car keys are expensive mainly because people start at the dealership. It is worth a phone call first to establish what your particular vehicle actually needs.

Why no one can quote you without the registration

Car keys are not a single product. A key for a vehicle from the 1990s may be a plain blade that can be cut mechanically. From the late 1990s onwards most keys carry an immobiliser transponder that has to be recognised by the vehicle. Later still come remote fobs and proximity keys. The registration identifies which of these you have, and that determines both what is possible and what it costs.

Whether you still hold a working key matters

Replacing a spare while you still have a working key is a straightforward, planned job. Replacing the last key, with none left, is a different and more involved piece of work on most modern vehicles. This is the single biggest cost difference in car keys, and it is the reason a spare is worth having before you need it rather than after.

Broken, worn and unresponsive keys

Not every failing key needs replacing. A fob that has stopped working often needs nothing more than a battery. A key that has snapped can sometimes be rebuilt around the existing blade and chip. A worn blade that no longer turns smoothly may be cut afresh before it strands you. Describe exactly what the key does and does not do when you call.

What it costs and what you will need

Attendance and labour follow the published rates on the pricing page; the key itself depends entirely on the vehicle, so the cost is confirmed on the phone before anything is ordered. You will be asked to prove the vehicle is yours — the V5C registration document, your insurance details and photographic ID are the usual evidence. Any locksmith who does not ask is one to avoid.

Common questions

Do I need to go to a main dealer for a replacement key?

Not always, and it is worth asking before you do. What your vehicle needs depends on its age and key type. Call with the registration and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can help with or whether the dealer is the right route.

Is it cheaper to replace a key before I lose the last one?

Considerably, on most modern vehicles. Cutting and matching an additional key while a working one exists is a planned job; replacing the last key with none remaining is more involved. A spare is one of the few genuinely worthwhile pieces of preventative spending on a car.

My fob has stopped working. Is the key dead?

Often it is just the battery, which is an inexpensive thing to rule out first. If a fresh battery does not restore it, the fob or its pairing with the vehicle may be at fault, which is a different job. Try the battery before paying for anything else.

What do I need to prove the car is mine?

The V5C registration document, insurance documents and photographic ID are the usual evidence. Expect to be asked. A locksmith who will cut a key for a vehicle without establishing that it is yours is not one you want anywhere near it.
