An auto locksmith deals with vehicle access and keys: opening a car when the keys are inside, extracting a snapped key, and arranging replacement keys. What is possible depends on the make, model, year and key type, so have the registration and a description of the key ready when you call.
Locked out of your vehicle, or holding a car key that no longer works? Call with the registration and we will tell you honestly what can be done and what it will involve before anyone travels.
Tell us the vehicle, not just the problem
Vehicle locking has changed enormously over twenty-five years, and what is straightforward on one car is a main-dealer job on another. Before anything is agreed we need the make, model, year and registration, the type of key — a plain blade, a blade with buttons, a fob you keep in your pocket — and whether you still hold any working key. That conversation happens on the phone, not on your driveway.
Vehicle lockouts
Keys locked inside, a door that will not release, a boot that has shut on the only key. The priority is opening the vehicle without damaging the door, the glass or the trim, and the method depends entirely on the vehicle. If a child or an animal is shut inside, or anyone is at risk, call 999 first — that is an emergency service matter, not a locksmith job.
Keys that have broken or stopped working
A key snapped in a door or ignition is an extraction job much like a house lock, and the broken section can often be removed without further damage. A fob that has stopped responding may simply need a battery. A key that turns but no longer starts the vehicle is a different problem again. Describing exactly what happens when you use the key saves time and money.
What it costs
Attendance and labour are charged at the rates published on the pricing page, in the same way as any other call-out. Parts for vehicles vary far too much between makes to publish a single from-price, so the cost is discussed and agreed on the phone once we know the vehicle. Nothing is ordered and nobody travels before you have agreed the charge.
Common questions
Can you open my car if the keys are locked inside?
Often, depending on the vehicle. Tell us the make, model and year, and whether the vehicle is locked with a key, a fob or automatically. If anyone or any animal is shut inside and at risk, call 999 first — that takes priority over any locksmith call-out.
What do you need to know before you come out?
The registration, make, model and year, the type of key you have, whether any working key still exists, and where the vehicle is. Proof that the vehicle is yours is also needed: the V5C, insurance documents or similar.
Can you help if the key has snapped in the lock or ignition?
Usually the broken section can be extracted, as with a house lock. Do not push the remaining half in or pull at the fragment, as both drive it deeper. Call and describe where the key has broken.
Do you work on vans and motorhomes?
Tell us the vehicle and we will say honestly whether we can help. Vans, motorhomes and caravans vary widely in how they are locked, and some need specialist equipment that is worth establishing before anyone travels rather than after.
