If your keys are locked in the car, check every door and the boot first, then your breakdown cover — many policies include vehicle lockouts at no extra cost. If a child or animal is shut inside, call 999 immediately. Otherwise call with your registration and location and we will confirm what can be done.
Keys on the seat and the door already shut is a bad few seconds. It is also usually solvable without any damage to the vehicle.
Check these three things first
Try every door, the tailgate and the boot — people lock the driver’s door and forget the rest. Check whether anyone else holds a spare and can reach you. Then check your breakdown cover, because a great many policies include vehicle lockouts as standard, and if yours does it will cost you nothing. None of this takes long, and all of it is cheaper than a call-out.
When it is an emergency, not a lockout
If a child, a vulnerable adult or an animal is shut inside the vehicle, call 999 straight away. On a warm day the inside of a car heats far faster than people expect, and that is an emergency service matter. The same applies if the vehicle is in a dangerous position — on a live carriageway, a level crossing or blocking an emergency route.
What we need from you
The registration, make, model and year; where the vehicle is and whether it is somewhere safe to work; whether it was locked by key, by fob or automatically; and whether any spare key exists. We will also need to see that the vehicle is yours — the V5C, insurance documents or photographic ID. The more exact the information, the more accurately the job can be quoted before anyone travels.
Opening the vehicle without damage
The aim is access without damage to the door, the glass, the trim or the weather seals, and the method depends entirely on the vehicle. Please do not try it yourself with a coat hanger or a wedge: modern door cards, airbag wiring and side glass are easily and expensively damaged, and the repair costs several times a call-out. Attendance and labour are charged at the published rates on the pricing page.
Common questions
Should I call my breakdown provider first?
Yes, it is worth two minutes. Many breakdown policies include vehicle lockouts at no additional charge, and if yours does there is no reason to pay for a call-out. Call us if it does not, or if the wait is unworkable.
My child is in the car. What do I do?
Call 999 immediately. A child or animal shut in a vehicle is an emergency, particularly in warm weather, and the emergency services will attend. Do not wait for a locksmith.
Can you open the car without damaging it?
That is the aim on every vehicle lockout, and the method is chosen for the specific vehicle. Tell us the make, model and year when you call so the right approach and the right tools come with us.
Can I not just use a coat hanger?
It is a reliable way to turn a lockout into a repair bill. Modern door cards, wiring looms, airbag components and side glass are easily damaged from the outside, and the resulting repair costs several times the call-out you were trying to avoid.
